A Puppet Portrait

When one visits a place like Pushkar, a little town teaming with foreign tourists the year round but primarily a pilgrimage centre for Hindus, the last place one expects to be staying in is a little weather-beaten joint called The Pink Floyd Cafe and Hotel! Nonetheless, that is exactly where I stayed!! A charming little place that you must visit if you're ever in Pushkar... If you go in for that kind of thing, each room is named after a Pink Floyd album- mine was called A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Considering I shelled out almost three times what I would've paid in any other hotel at that time of the year, it must've been exactly that!! This puppet was cheerily posing for me in the rooftop cafe, though the fact that she was hanging from the rafters did seem a little morbid...

Sahil, I had a blast reading your "4-things" bio. Almost as much fun as reading about the Pink Floyd Cafe and Hotel! Hah! I'm dying of laughter sitting here in my chair 13-odd thousand miles away!! Plus, to top it all off, you get the room named A Momentary Lapse of Reason. Too damn funny.

When I was a bacha lived in Madras for a bit...I would sometimes get to go up to Kodaikanal. My sister and I, we'd ride ponies, eat plums, swing on a lovely old swing, run around. I can still smell that place in my memory. I also remember the terrible drive up...wretching the whole way there. But it never stopped us from having the time of our lives!

ah.. the pink floyd hotel 2005. arriving after dark after dodging dogs with the royal enfield. marty insisted on staying after seeing the sign on the outskirts of town. bung lassis, not bad food, and prem joshua concert at the temple. i got the pick of the rooms up high (cant remember the name of hte room) but its the one the scots guy who travels there every year has. not a bad place to hang out in Dec 2005. Matt and Marty hatched a corporate plan intended on dominating IT in australia.

But i remember pushkar in 1984 - a 2 street town. the old run down maharaja palace before it was knocked down to build a luxury hotel. power cuts every night and walking back in the pitch black. a pommie guy carrying a ghetto blaster playing Blue Monday by new order over and over again in a room in the top of the tower. the 2 scandavian girls who said "why arent there any decent looking guy travellers in india". i was young and heartbroken. not a single israeli to be seen back in 1984 in pushkar. actually not many tourists at all to be seen then.

Which is better ? I guess it depends. I lamented the old days when i first arrived in 2005. Having said that the concert was cool.
